A few jackets that were hanging on the back of some chairs in the dining room fell down for no reason although they were there for hours, and I got freaked out. Yes, I know this sounds ridiculous but I need someone to talk me out of my craziness

You're right, that's pretty paranoid.
The jackets didn't fall for no reason, they fell because of a well-documented phenomenon known as gravity. Gravity is actually the #1 reason for things that fall, and it's absolutely relentless. It will pull on an object until said object falls to the ground, and it never releases its grip.
But you already know that, so you're not afraid of gravity. You're afraid of something else entirely, which is ghosts. That's OK, I'm good with that too. I happen to believe in ghosts myself, mostly because I've seen them more than a few times, and I have no problem with the idea. I don't really think you experienced one, but let's say you did. Just because, that's why.
So what is a ghost? Is it a lost tormented soul that can't be released until it gets closure? No. Is it a demon sent from the depths of hell to follow you and endlessly harass you by (of all scary things available) knocking stuff over? No, not that either. Is it a person? Yes it is. Look up the definition of a ghost anywhere you want, and you'll see that it's a person without a body. That's it, that's all and nothing more or less. It's not even always a departed person in the definition, but it's always just a person. Ghosts are just people.
While some people are scary (ie: criminals, stalkers, bikers, Stephen Harper, etc.), most are not. You see people all the time every day and even interact with a few on a regular basis, and they're generally not very scary.
Now look at something else: While living people can hurt you, ghosts simply can't. Ghost sightings are rare enough, but you'll never see a credible story of a ghost attack no matter how hard you look. Note how I said credible: For-profit movies don't count, and neither do friend-of-a-friend accounts recited by 12 year olds! Go to any hospital or police department and ask them how many ghost-attack injuries they've treated and investigated. Then look through credible news outlets and look for the same thing. The longer you spend looking, the better. But you won't find anything. There isn't one credible account of a ghost ever harming anyone in the civilized world. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, that's just the way it is. Maybe it's because they can't for whatever reason, or maybe it's because they wouldn't want to, but ghosts don't harm living people.
So even if you did encounter a ghost, you ran into someone who couldn't possibly hurt you and is most likely just a regular person like everyone else. That just ain't so scary at all.
Feel a little better now?

It's called gravity.
-
Spirits/ghost don't exist. Even if they did what would they want with you? Just stop being paranoid and go downstairs.

Wait and see if anything else happens or changes. I for one, believe in the 'Spirit World'.
