Every one of us is a host to a sentient energy life form. They might inhabit us on some symbiotic level or perhaps even through another plain of existence. But they are more than just a part of us – they define us. They add to our life Experience as we do to theirs. Their sole purpose is quite simply to Experience a life and to this aim they traverse the bondless frontier of space in search of hosts to occupy - moving on to the next host after their current one expires. Spending huge portions of their time drifting through space (maybe even communicating with their own kind, or Not) and the rest of their time spent living and Experiencing the lives of the various life forms, that reside in a little-known town called the Universe. This accumulation of life Experience defines the syllabus of Enlightenment. And that is what this life form ultimately requires – to gain more Knowledge to fuel their journey to Enlightenment-Ville, sate the hunger for Knowledge. This drives them. As they Experience more lives, they gain Knowledge and this Knowledge moves them ever closer toward “Ultimate Enlightenment”….’The Pinnacle of Existence’. However, inevitably every new host shares an insight, or an emotion, a tradition or a belief that the last did not, making the quest for “true Enlightenment” an endless (but hardly pointless) endeavour for our little symbiotic buddy, and so, they forever meander the unknown, the concept of time – irrelevant, the innate instinct guiding them to “Enlightenment”….
…or, you know, Not.
This took me over an hour to write (boned) so please at least one reply would be just super.
My other theory, which I didn’t spend quite as much time developing, is; maybe we’re their RPG and they’re using us for XP - their drug of choice!

You would have enjoyed talking with Arthur Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein and also Ray Bradbury. Your idea is not quite so whacked out as you think, you are in good company with the minds of these guys.
