After researching for over an hour, I'm still unclear about the topic of creationism. Could someone explain to me in layman's terms?

There are many different types of creationism (Christian , Hindu & all the other thousands of religions) - all claiming to be the one true creationism
Even if you take just Christianity , there are many different types of creationism - eg Christians dont agree on whether the story of Genesis is literally true (most Christians worldwide dont believe this story) , whether BigBang theory is true (most Christians accept Big Bang theory & it was first postulated by the devout priest Georges Lemaitre) , whether evolution is true (most Christians worldwide & all the major churches agree with evolution)
So : "creationism" is in the eye of the beholder. Literal Genesis creationism is a position held by a tiny minority of people worldwide, mainly in USA, and not part of mainstream Christianity. It also involves abandoning virtually all of modern science
EDIT "Everything perfectly developed on it's own beating astronomical odds that cannot be calculated." We know exactly the probability for the universe being the way it is : ie 100%. Its here, we are trying to explain it.
Perhaps you could lend you creationist statistician mind to calculating the probability of god existing and having a Semite son called Jesus and not a Korean son called Mr Kim

1. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
or
2. Everything came magically together on their own, protozoa somehow developed on their own, then created on their own, all the plants and animals that exist today. In addition, the human race magically developed from that as well. Somehow the early protozoa didn't die somewhere along the way, but continued. Everything perfectly developed on it's own beating astronomical odds that cannot be calculated.

Creation is not a single concept. There are some creationists that state species are immutable, forever stable no matter how many generations pass. Immutable species fixity allows for slight variation between individual members of the population but it does not allow for new species arising or even acquiring new characteristics in daughter generations. They remain in essence frozen as they were made. Other creationist have variations that have a continuum of answers that slowly add in data of observed changes in species and in the age of the earth.
