There are WAY more medicines that were animal tested but never made it to human testing than there are that did make it to human testing. The animal testing is involved in establishment of both effect and safety before the drugs are given to humans. The path from chemical design to being used on the general public takes around 10 years, many many hours of work, and rigorous tests.
