"Butte" is the generic name for the landform (see Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butte ).
The picture shows a classic trio - The Mittens and Merrick Butte - in Monument Valley, Utah/Arizona (see image http://thalmann.com/images/96043.htm ).
Out of interest, a mesa is broader than a butte, with a much larger flat top ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesa ).
