let x=hamburger price y= hot dog price
2x+5y=8
2x=8-5y
x=4-5/2*y
substitute this in for x in the other equation
5x+2y=9.5
5*(4-5/2*y) + 2y = 9.5
20 - 12.5y + 2y = 9.5
10.5=10.5y
y=1
substitute back in 1 for y
2x+5(1)=8
2x=3
x=1.5
$1.50

Let m = price of hamburgers and t = price of hot dogs.
2m + 5t = 8
5m + 2t = 9.5
solve the system of equations:
2m + 5t = 8
2m = 8 - 5t
m = 4 - 5t/2
substitute into the other equation:
5(4 - 5t/2) + 2t = 9.5
20 - 25t/2 + 2t = 9.5
-21t/2 = -10.5
t = $1
m = 4 - 5(1)/2 = $1.50
