Math question, is this right

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-10-10] [Hit: ]
step 3: try to get x on one side.you let -15 change magically to 15-it is right,......
2(x+6) over 3 =x-5

LCD will be 3.

so does it become

2x+12=3x-15
2X+12-3X=3X-15-3X
-X+12=15
-X+12-12=15-12
-X=3

Did I do this right?

Hi,

2(x+6) over 3 =x-5
2x + 12 = 3x - 15
2X + 12 - 3X = 3X - 15 - 3X
-X + 12 = -15 <=you had the wrong sign.
-X + 12 - 12 = -15 - 12
-X = -27
X = 27 <==ANSWER

I hope that helps!! :-)

so basically the equation would be [2(x+6)]/3 = x-5 right?

step 1: multiply both sides of the equation by 3 to get rid of the 3. that should leave you with 2(x+6)=3x-15

step 2: distribute the left side of the equation. you should get 2x+12=3x-15

step 3: try to get x on one side. you can either subtract 12 from both sides to get 2x=3x-27 and then subtract 3x from both sides to get -x=-27 OR add 15 to both sides to get 2x+27=3x and then subtract 2x from both sides to get 27=x

in the end x should equal 27

I got 27

i think I know where you missed up

2x +12 = 3x-15
Collect like terms on 1 side

2x-3x = -12-15
-1x = -27
-1x/-1 = -27/-1

x = 27

-
No

between
2X+12-3X=3X-15-3X
and
-X+12=15
you let -15 change magically to 15

-
it is right, but instead of -x = 3 please write x = -3
(multiply by -1)
