A Gallup Poll conducted July 25, 2008 asked adults nationwide, " Whats is your favorite summer Olympics even".
Among 1007 adults surveyed, 27% said swimming, 18% said track, and 12% said gymnastics.
( these were the top 3 reponses and 20 % had no favorite or were unsure what sport was thier favorite.)
A sport writer claims that less than one in eigth americans consider gymnastics to be thier favorite Summer
olympic sport. use hypothesis test to evaluate this claim. be sure to state the null and alternative hypothesis,
check any nessacary conditions, compute a P-vaulue.
So i started off by checking the conditions
random? yes
10%? yes
S/F?
n*p=1007*.2=201.4
nq=1007*.8=805.6
ok bc greater than 10
Ho: p=0.2
HA: p =/ 0.2

E(p^) = 1/8= 0.125
sd(p^)= sqr((.2*.8)/1007) = 12.69
mean = .2
SD= 12.69
and i dont know what else to do?

-
Ho : P >= 1/8
Ha : P < 1/8 (sport writer's claim that less than one in eigth americans consider gymnastics to be thier favorite Summer Olympic sport is acceptable)
Under Ho, Sample proportion p is normally distributed with
mean P=1/8 = 0.125 and sd = sqrt(PQ/n) = sqrt (0.125*0.875/1007) = 0.01042
value of Test statistic is
z = (0.12 - 0.125)/0.01042 = -0.4798
P-value is 0.3156
Since this value is greater than 0.05, at 5% level of significance, we decide that there is insufficient evidence to accept the writer's claim.
