find the average wind speed and the average airspeed of the plane-OK here is my calculation for question 1.a motorboat took 3hrs to make a downstream trip with 4mph current. The return trip against the same current took 5hr. Find the speed of the boat in still water.speed = distance / time hence distance = speed * time or d=s*tFor downstream trip boat will go its speed + current speed hence:d=(s+4)*180For upstream trip, actual speed is reduced by current speed:d=(s-4)*300The distance travelled is the same upstream and downstream so we we set eqn1 = eqn2(s+4)*180 = (s-4)*300180s + 720 = 300s - 12001920 = 120ss = 1920/120 = 16mphAs a check:downstream trip: 20*3=60 milesupstream trip: 12*5 = 60 milesI hope I got that right.......
9)with a tail wind, a small aircraft can fly 1050 miles in 5 hours. against this same wind the plane can fly the same distance in 7 hours. find the average wind speed and the average airspeed of the plane
OK here is my calculation for question 1.
a motorboat took 3hrs to make a downstream trip with 4mph current. The return trip against the same current took 5hr. Find the speed of the boat in still water.
speed = distance / time hence distance = speed * time or d=s*t
For downstream trip boat will go its speed + current speed hence:
d=(s+4)*180
For upstream trip, actual speed is reduced by current speed:
d=(s-4)*300
The distance travelled is the same upstream and downstream so we we set eqn1 = eqn2
(s+4)*180 = (s-4)*300
180s + 720 = 300s - 1200
1920 = 120s
s = 1920/120 = 16mph
As a check:
downstream trip: 20*3=60 miles
upstream trip: 12*5 = 60 miles
I hope I got that right.
