What two numbers multiply to 1640 and combine to 1

which in turn is close to √1600 = 40. So youre looking for factors near 40. In fact, my first guess would be 40.......
this is one of the questions on my take home test i need help. please help me.

By "combine" I'm guessing you mean subtraction, because no other simple operation makes sense.

x * y = 1640
x + 1 = y

x(x+1) = 1640

You could solve this by the quadratic equation, or by guessing factors. Note that x must be pretty close to √1640, which in turn is close to √1600 = 40. So you're looking for factors near 40. In fact, my first guess would be 40.

1640 = 40 * 41

x + y = 1
y = 1 - x

xy = 1640
x(1 - x) = 1640
x - x^2 = 1640
0 = x^2 - x + 1640

(1 ± √-6559) / 2
x = (1 ± i√6559) / 2

y = 1 - (1 ± i√6559) / 2

both are imaginary complex numbers
