What number is greater than zero? explain

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-04-28] [Hit: ]
a negative number (base) raised to an odd power is negative............
A - (-4)^5
B - -4^5
C- (-5)^4
D - -5^4

and why do choices a and b (or c and d) have different answers? what does the parenthesis do to the sum?

-
So (-4)^5 = (-4)*(-4)*(-4)*(-4)*(-4)=-1024
-4^5= -1*4^5 = (-1)*4*4*4*4*4=-1024
(-5)^4=(-5)*(-5)*(-5)*(-5)=625
-5^4=-1*5^4=(-1)*5*5*5*5=-625

So the answer is C.

-
...a negative number (base) raised to an odd power is negative...

...a negative number (base) raised to an even power is positive...

the negative of a positive number (base) raised to any power is negative...

Order of operations, properties of exponents...read your textbook.

(- 5)^4 = 625

qed

-
A) -(-4)^5 = -(-1024) two negatives make a positive, therefore it is = 1024 which is greater than 0

B) - - 4^5 two negatives make a positive so its 4^5 = 1024 which is greater than 0

C) - (-5)^4 since its a even exponent the negative inside parentheses becomes positive - (625) this is a negative which is less than 0

D) - - 5^4 the two negatives cancel out so its 5^4=625 which is greater than 0
