How much surface area will this cover

that is 4.8 * 12 = 57.57.6 * 57.6 = 3317.76 square millimeters,......
I'm thinking about making a mosaic and wondering how many square inches a gross (144) of tiny tiles will cover. The tiles are square and measure 4.8 mm. When I tried to do the math, I kept getting a different answer every time. Guess I'm getting bogged down in the conversions from square millimeters to square inches. Can anyone figure this out for me?

If you have 144 tiles, it will be a 12x12 matrix of tiles (assuming you want it square, the surface area will be the same either way)

if each side is 12 tiles long, that is 4.8 * 12 = 57.6 mm

57.6 * 57.6 = 3317.76 square millimeters, now to convert it.

This is the same as 33.17 square centimeters.

conversion from cm squares to inches square is 0.155

33.17 * 0.155 = 5.14 square inches

130 square inches is wayyyyy off. That is more than 10x10 feet!

First calculate the area it will cover in mm.

4.8x4.8=23.04mm squared per tile. So with 144 tiles the area covered will be 144x23.04=3317.76mm

Now convert that from mm to inches = 130.62 (to 2 decimal places) or 130.617195356 (to 9 decimal places). Did 9 decimal places for you so you can figure it out to whatever you need it to be s.f. or d.p wise.

4.8 mm x 4.8 mm x 144 tiles x 1 in/25.4mm x 1 in /25.4 mm= = 5.12 in ^2
