the correct answer is B. but how did they get that? help me please?


I work it out like this x+y= -1 and 5x=3y
but the answer I got was 3/5 and 5/3.
where did they get the 8 from?

x+y=-1 5x=3y
x=-y-1 5(-y-1)=3y
-5y-5=3y
-8y=5 --> y=-5/8
x+(-5/8)=-1
x-5/8=-1
x=-3/8
-3/8+(-5/8)=-8/8=-1

you are almost there. you've got the right eqns.

soln. 5x = 3y , solving for x, x = 3/5 y

plug in in eqn. x + y = -1

..................... 3/5 y + y = -1


LCD is 5, 8/5 y = -1 , y = - 5/8

solving for x , x = 3/5 ( - 5/8 )

........................= -3/8
