We were taught that river velocity increases downstream, and that deposition happens more down stream.. So why are we told that Deposition occurs as a river slows down and loses energy.

River velocity tends to increase as the river grows from a brook to a mature river, but slows again as the river widens to an estuary, or spreads out into a delta. Much deposition occurs in the final stages of the river.
