It only takes 1 person to design a bridge and 1000 people to actually build it. Also, if a single person designed 100 different types of bridges, couldn't everyone just use one of the pre-made designs and never need another engineer again?
I always hear about people wanting to be the "designer" or the "engineer" of a huge city project, but how many actually get to invent something new?
I know that engineers are important in the same way that having an inventory is important, but it only takes 1 inventor to invent something new and everyone else after that is just copying the same idea after that. So why do we need so many engineers? Wouldn't it make more sense to ask for about 99% of people to do physical work and only 1% or less to do the paperwork?

We don't. College scam to make alot of money. There are 1000's of unemployed engineers in The United States.

You actually have no idea about engineering design. Just think of one thing. There is no two place in this world is similar. If I answer the question from your perspective of designing a bridge then I must say that designing a bridge require consideration of a lot of factors including site selection, flow of the river, locality, transport facility, depth of the river and such other. So how do you think it would be enough to design a single bridge and fit it every part of the world.
Hope you got your answer. Need not explain lot.
