Just curious, but what's the material used for welds made of for say carbon steel? Is it mostly the same composition (mostly ferrous) or is it a specific make up of different materials? I had always assumed a weld was the same as the metals it was joining (I'm a new engineer, please forgive me).

Usually you would use a filler that matches the base metal as close as possible. It really depends on what you are welding and what welding process you are using. In carbon steel you can come close to the base metal or go to a higher or lower carbon content it really depends on the base metal and what you are looking for in the weldment, there are many fillers out there so it is hard to answer your question. It just depends on what you are looking for in the welded joint, materials used, design function, and so on.
