Atoms in the same group have the same number and arrangement of electrons in their valence shell.

The outer electrons in most groups tend to have the same orbital electron arrangement in their valence shell. You will see this behavior at the right and left sides of the periodic table. However in the middle, where the transition metals are, there are notable exceptions. For example, the column with iron has Fe with an s2 valence shell, Ru has s1 and Os has s2 again. This happens because the energy differences between the d and f orbitals and the next shell's s orbital often overlap, so they do not fill in order.

There is similar variability in group VIA, headed by Cr. And some of the rows in the transition metals have the same valence orbitals , but that breaks down at the edges.
