Its for a science lab.Plz help! im supposed to seperate salt from sand. i figured id add water to the mixture. so the salt can dissolve into the water and i can driain the solution out. the only thing is... i dont know how much salt is in the mixture! so i dont know how much water is required. so can someone tell me how much water im supposed to add? plz nd thnk u! or tell me otehr ideas to seperate salt from sand!thnks!

Hi, first you would warm about 50 ml of distilled water. ( Solids dissolve better in warm water). Then you add the water to the sand salt mixture while stirring. Continue to add water until you no longer see any salt crystals. If you more water than is needed that is not a problem.

Once you filter off the salt water, you rinse the sand with more warm distilled water to wash off any salt residue. Add the rinse water to the filtrate. Then to retrieve the salt you would heat the aqueous mixture in an evaporating dish until nearly dry. Then you set it aside to cool and for crystals to form. ( NB never heat a salt solution to dryness as hot salt crystals will spit out of the dish and can cause accidents.)

Since you are driving the water off any how, it does not matter if you add a bit much.
