So I had to start with butane and synthesize butanoic acid a few of the following reactions: addition, elimination, oxidation, reduction, condensation, substitution and hydrolysis
this is what i have:
Step 1: (elimination?)
butane ---> 1-butene + 2-butene + hydrogen gas
Step 2: addition
1-butene + water ---> 1-butanol + 2-butanol
Step 3: oxidation
1-butanol + [O] --> butanol + hydrogen gas
Step 4: oxidation
butanal + [O] --> butanoic acid
______________________________________…
or should i do:
Step 1: substitution
butane + chlorine gas --> 1-chlorobutane + 2-chlorobutane + HCl
Step 2: substitution
1-chlorobutane + water --> butanol + HCl
Step 3: oxidaiton
1-butanol + [O] --> butanoic acid
im only in grade 12, so please refrain from really complicated answers.
thanks!

The second one is right in my opinion
because i dont think the first step of the first one is quite right
cause in elimination you remove the atoms or group of atoms that replaced hydrogen from the main carbon chain
with butane all you have is hydrogen soo your not really removing the substances that removed the hydrogen in the first place !
if it were a halogenoalkane then you would get alkene cause then you are removing the halogens which ppreviously replaced the hudrogen atoms from the main carbon chain
hope i helped
