And benzoic acid? I have no idea what benzoic acid is and I tried to look it up and it didn't give me any answers I could work with...what would be the best solution to remove these things from a mixture and get all five components in their dry, solid states?

The iron filings is easy - use a magnet.
Copper shot are relatively large compared to sand and salt, so a sieve would work nicely.
Now, add water. If the water is relatively warm, it will dissolve the benzoic acid and the salt, leaving the sand.

Now, if you added the water properly, you can get the snow globe effect with the benzoic acis (see:
http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemistryh… by cooling the water.

Then just evaporate the water that's left after sifting out the 'snow flakes', and you have the salt.
