Recrystallization in the pharmaceutical industry

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-05-30] [Hit: ]
-Recrystallisation is is toward the end of the process. Your substance is melted down and placed in a separating funnel. The funnel sucks air and any soluble impurities through leaving behind the solid product.. Before they separate it they usually wash it. What they wash it with is dependent on the product its self.......
So i know they use this process to purify substances that are being made into drugs. my questions are;
what is being made
in what stage is it used (big, middle, end)
how is it beneficial.

if you know any of the answers or simply want ti add something you know, that would be greatly appreciated.

Recrystallisation is is toward the end of the process. Your substance is melted down and placed in a separating funnel. The funnel sucks air and any soluble impurities through leaving behind the solid product.. Before they separate it they usually 'wash' it. What they wash it with is dependent on the product it's self. Once the product is there it is put in a rotary evaporator to thoroughly dry. You can repeat the separating funnel steps as many times as you like really, it makes the product more pure. So it is beneficial to do it more than once to remove more impurities. You can test the purity of you'r product then by either performing a melting point test to determine whether its close to the book value, the closer the value the more pure your product. Or you can use a TLC plate.

Im not in pharmaceuticals im doing forensic chemistry and this is how we have recrystallised many substances in our Organic chem pracs. I should imagine that they follow the same techniques though.
