Kalium. The K comes from the Latin name for the element that we know as potassium. Interestingly enough, the name kalium dates from a relatively recent period of time (the 19th century, when Latin was used more frequently in science). Potassium comes from "pot ash", which literally refers to the ashes in which a pot might be sitting. Potassium salts were extracted from the ashes, by soaking the ashes in water, and then by removing the water and allowing it to evaporate. The solid that was left contained, among other things, the element potassium.
