What does losing biodiversity mean

Does it basically just mean losing plant and animal species?
Des 'loss of biodiversity' just another translate to "more extinctions?"

Kind of confused what exactly is meant by "loosing biodiversity" in a specific area. Can you just as well say loosing species?

It just means that there is less (or declining) variety in species within a certain region. It is a result of more extinctions but not the same thing.
