I know its purpose is to motivate organisms to reproduce, but how did that happen?

As more complex life evolved from simpler life forms, the neurological reward systems developed to be more complex as well. What likely registered as "completing the life cycle" in the pre-mammalian reptile brain became a chemically more complex affair with the development of emotions and higher brain functioning.
This "completing the life cycle" response to copulation was, like most things, variable among individuals and as a result necessarily stronger in some individuals than others. This made sex more pleasurable for some and their orgasms were a better motivator than for those individuals with weak or less pleasurable orgasms. Individuals that derive more pleasure from sex will likely be more determined to seek it and in the long run have more offspring. Of their offspring, those with the best orgasms will have more sex, more offspring and over time the entire species will have better orgasms because it is being perpetuated more by those having great orgasms than by those having mediocre orgasms.
Think about it, (even though this is hypothetical) If someone found orgasms painful, they would NEVER have sex and likely never reproduce.
On the other hand if someone had orgasms that felt like morphine, they would have sex all the time and even in the age of contraception likely end up with more children.
Put simply, as humans evolved, those with slightly better orgasms out bred those with slightly worse orgasms, gradually turning what was at one point just a necessary "completion of life cycle" feeling into what it is today.

Genetic mutation is a more probable explanation for the development of orgasms than divine intervention. Maybe think about taking a biology course if your interested in the science; Or Wikipedia "orgasm" for a more detailed explanation than strangers on Yahoo answers is willing to give

I can't speak for men, but women's is derived from the stimulation and contraction of muscle in the clitoris. How it exactly evolved that way I'm not sure.
