D2. A3. B4. B5. A6. Gametes are produced via meiosis.......
Using specific events in the formation of gametes and zygotes, describe why there is a greater diversity in sexual reproduction than in asexual reproduction.

Question 7 (Essay Worth 5 points)

Compare and contrast what happens in mitosis and meiosis and discuss the importance of each process to a living organism.

-
1. D
2. A
3. B
4. B
5. A
6. Gametes are produced via meiosis. Meiosis involves crossing over, which causes genetic diversity. Also, zygotes are formed when gametes from two different organisms are combined. This means that the zygote receives influence from two separate genetic codes.
7. Meiosis creates 4 non-identical cells. Mitosis creates 2 identical cells. Meiosis is important for genetic variability in our species. Meiosis allows sexual reproduction. Mitosis is important for things like our skin cells being replaced as old ones die and fall off. Mitosis is also the only form of reproduction for many single celled organisms.

-
1. ANSWER IS: “It divides one diploid cell into four haploid cells.”
2. ANSWER IS: “In metaphase I, tetrad sets of homologous chromosomes stay together as they line up along the center of the cell.”
3. ANSWER IS: “Anaphase II”
4. ANSWER IS: “Chromatids of homologous chromosomes exchange corresponding segments.”
5. If an organism’s diploid cells contain 8 chromosomes, how many chromosomes do its haploid cells contain?
6. ANSWER IS:” Diploid = twice that of haploid
So, 4.
7. Sexual reproduction has a greater diversity than asexual due to the fact that the parents have many different genetic traits that the other doesn't have. Sexual reproduction has cells that undergo meiosis and crossing over, which allows some genes to change from one chromosome to the other. This changing gives way to many different combinations of genes, which are in the gametes that are in the ovaries of women and testes of males. When one of the gametes from each meet, they give rise to many different traits, some shown, others not (dominant and recessive). In asexual reproduction, the cells (including those who form the new offspring) merely replicate, not making a daughter cell that is different from the parent. They are identical.
