bacteria are one of the most commonly and most easily transformed organism. what feature of bacteria makes this possible? why?
-
Plasmids are one of the features that bacteria use to transform. Plasmids are parts of DNA that are not part of the chromosome. Plasmids can pick up DNA from the environment and incorporate the genetic information into the genome of the bacteria. Bacteria can then share that information with other bacteria cells through conjugation, when one bacteria spreads genetic information to another. Another way genetic information is transported from one bacteria cell to another is through viruses. A virus infects the bacteria, and when the bacteria dies, the virus moves on to another bacteria cell taking DNA from the cell it previously infected.

Their DNA is just open throughout the cell and not bound by a membrane , like in animals cells. This makes it more accesible to the environment and hence can be changed more easily. Also, bacteria replicate rapidly (every 30 minutes) and so they can undergo evolution from selection and drift very quickly. Also since there are so many of them and they have poor DNA repair proteins, there is a lot of mutation in the bacteria leading to many polymorphisms.

conjugation allows for bacterium to swap genes and rna changing their abilities completely.
