It secretes estrogen and progesterone to help maintain the endometrium of the uterus from collapsing and restarting back the menstrual cycle. Before that the follicular cells were secreting estrogen and LH however ovulation occurred and destroyed these cells and eventually the corpus luteum forms to help maintain a stable pregnancy by keeping estrogen & progesterone levels normal but they can only be kept at a normal range if the egg has been fertilized and it begins to secrete humangonadotropin hormones.
