They are examples of a squared expression subtracted from another squared expression, otherwise known as the difference of squares. Easy to factor: p² - q² = (p + q)(p - q)
16a² = (4a)² and 4b² = (2b)², so 16a² - 4b² is the difference of squares.
16a² - 4b² = (4a + 2b)(4a - 2b)
16a² = (4a)² and 4b² = (2b)², so 16a² - 4b² is the difference of squares.
