so my pediatrician recommended me to go to a center for human genetics because my family has a genetic case for alport syndrome. the thing is that I'm really nervous about getting my DNA tested because it can find out if I have to genetic condition, it can also find out if I have any mental disorders I don't know about or if I will develop cancer or heart problems e.t.c down the road.
are they going to take a strand of my hair? what exactly are they going to do?

Yeah, a cheek swab almost certainly. Maybe a blood sample, depending on the test.
And if you're going just to get tested for one specific condition, they're not going to look at the rest of your DNA, so you're not going to get back some big list of other things that are wrong with your DNA. That's way expensive, if nothing else. They're only going to test you for the one specific marker that relates to the one disease that's in your family. Nothing else.

They are likely to use your blood or hair. Not a big amount and nothing to be worried about. A formal thing rather than a doctors visit since at most they will use a little needle and thank you for the visit, arrange when you can pick up the results.

Most likely, a simple cheek swab with a cotton tip stick.
