I live in Plymouth (uk), on the outskirts. I have a good pond full of wild life including alot of insects but im a fan of spiders and would want to see some of our semi aquatic spider species take up residency in our pond. However im not sure how to attract them or even if im in the correct area to see them any ideas?

You will find them in the wild, in just such places as like your pond. There is no real way to attract them, and they may even mysteriously appear. Often, it is a matter of searching for them.
Along streams and creeks, edges of lakes or ponds, amongst rocks and tree roots are good places to find them.
The fun begins with trying to catch these. In spite of their large size, they are quick, very quick, and literally have to be caught by hand. This is a trick in itself, but can be done. you simply have to coax them onto your hand without threatening them, or they will run. Don't grab them, this can provoke a bite. Persistence pays off, and once a spider is in your hand, you can then put it in a container, and the rest is logical.
(you can try a container and lid, but I've not had much success with this)
They do make good pets, and if your pond favors them, They may never leave it. as long as there is food and shelter, they will adapt quickly.
I have only kept them in terrariums, but don't see a problem with a pond. You might like these:
