The lining of the uterus (which is the endometrium) fills with blood in preparation for a fertilized secondary oocyte (egg). If fertilization does not occur, since humans have menstrual cycles as opposed to estrous cycles, the endometrium is shed instead of reabsorbed. Wasteful and gross, right?
But let me tell you... If you are in AP Bio by any chance (I would guess not since there are only 4 options), you should really know this one. It's a very easy question and the test will be hell for you if you don't even know this. Otherwise, nothing to worry about!
