do people really think that a few cliches are going to overturn 200 years of scientific discovery ?
worse, return mankind to the dark ages of ignorance & superstition ?

It's called proselytizing. Some religions draw their power in the form of ignorance called the Doctrine of Biblical Literalism. Those in charge great power over people who need their interpretations of self contradictory passages. If people find out that page one isn't literal, the leadership loses influence and thus money. Maintaining ignorance preserves cash flow. You see the manifestation here in the form of cut and pastes that rarely actually address the question but form a general objection based on sciencey-sounding terms.
