Who was the first person in space

wikipedia says John Glenn was the 3rd person in space. I thought he was the first , who was the first person in space?

John Glenn was NOT the third person in space; he was the third American. Glenn was, however, the first American to actually orbit Earth in Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962.

- The first ever human to journey into outer space was Yuri Gagarin from the Soviet Union. He entered the outer space when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961.

- The first American (and second person in general) in space was Alan Bartlett Shepard. He would also later become the fifth person to walk on the Moon.
- The Second American in space was Gus Grissom in the Mercury 4 on July 21st, 1961. Grissom was killed along with fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission at Cape Canaveral. He was the first of the Mercury Seven to die.

- The first humans to escape Earth orbit were Frank Borman, Jim Lovell and William Anders in 1968 on board Apollo 8, which achieved lunar orbit and reached a maximum distance of 377,349 km from the Earth.
