Why should you not look directly? at the flash when someone is taking your picture

From a photographic point of view, it produces red-eye on the photo - not a nice look and tricky to correct.
From a biological point of view (haha view - eye get it ? :) ) I think it might damage your retina - Same reason why you shouldn't look directly into the sun.
