Its really hard to show a 3-dimensional idea on a 2-dimensional image.
The idea of that metaphor is to convey the concept that mass distorts space - its NOT intended to be a literal representation.
Mass doesn''t displace space, so the idea of a ball in water isn't right. Mass distorts the space around it.
Its space itself that is distorted - atoms or light or anything else in space are moved by that distortion.

I think that if you bend light to make something change in time-space by having it appear or disappear one is demonstrating an electromagnetic field that equalizes a differing polarity in light as to what you might call the top and bottom of the mesh concept for time space. When you introduce a complex of matter like earth, the curvature caused by it "mass" may almost equalized by time and distance.

It is only an analogy. Three dimensional space can be thought of as a subset of four dimensional space-time in a way analogous to the way we think of a two dimensional surface bending in three dimensional space.
It is a little hard to describe, but if you really (and I do mean REALLY) want to understand it, you need to read the book, "Flatland, a Romance of Many Dimensions". It is available free online.

Correct. It's just a model. The model shows the curvature of a 2D "space", while our 3D space is curved.
Up and down in this model represent higher or lower energy states, not directions in our space.
It's not the molecules that are being bent, but space itself.

Space is a fabric. Our minds can't "see" this, but its been proven mathematically.
