Basically: What would it take to terraform or colonize an alien world assuming we have figured out how to reach it?

Blank's answer is good. It does depend on the planet. But I think that we could terraform any planet if we could get there, that is the biggest problem there is, how to get there. The universe is so large, there are planets that are light-years away from where we are now, so if we found a way that could get us there quickly, we could do it. Even with using the example of Mars, there are ways to transform a planet to be habitable to humans. For Mars, we would just need to create an atmosphere, and we would need to find a sustainable food source and other things, in time we could solve all of the problems. It would take different things to terraform different planets, so the answer to your question summarised is that it depends.

Depends on the world. Mars for example is cold and dry. To terraform Mars we would need to add greenhouse gases like CFCs to increase the temperature and atmospheric pressure. We would need to add oxygen for respiration and ozone in the stratosphere for UV protection.
