Dogs are exactly domesticated wolves. I just watched a PBS Nova Special on television were they tested it by DNA. You can go to this link and watch it yourself.

Domestic dogs are SUB-SPECIES of the Gray wolf (Canis lupus). That is why they are classified as Canis lupus familiaris. Just as say the Arctic wolf is a sub-species (Canis lupus arctos).
Species and sub-species are not the same thing.
If they were the SAME species domestic dogs would be classified as Canis lupus.
From there domestic dogs are broken down into breeds.
And just because something can breed does not make them the same species. Would you say an African Lion and Bengal Tiger are the same species? Of course not but they can breed and produce offspring. Would you say that a Polar Bear and Grizzly Bear are the same species? Of course not but they can breed and produce offspring.
If you want "actual evidence" that they are not the same species all you have to do is look at their genetic coding and makeup. Close, but still different.

Dogs are actually rather a sub-species of the Wolves, but just more tamer and very trusting of humans, but yeah their basically sort of the same just a bit different. Hope This Helped;)
