org/wikipedia/co…-Youre in the milky way galaxy and the whole milky way galaxy is too big and spread apart for you to see.-It will look like a strip of faint cloud looking dust in the sky can been seen in places with minimal lights around you-light spillage from towns closes your pupils down making them less sensitive and unable to see faint stars/galaxies-Your eyes are not awesome enough to see it.......
As you might know our sun orbits the Galactic Core every 250 Million years, so our vantage point of the Milky way is ever changing, with given enough time we will be able to see the other side of the milky way when our suns orbit take our solar system to that side, however we will never be able to see the complete structure of our galaxy unless we travel far away from it, Large Magellanic Cloud would be a nice place to see the beautiful shape of our galaxy, at 160000 ly from Galactic Center, any one looking at the Milky way from LMC will see it at least 40 times the size of full moon.

You can see the milky way galaxy, but only away from light pollution, and at certain times in the year. Since you're in the milky way, you won't see the spiral, but here's what it looks like from our view- http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co…
