Meteorites are from small clumps of dusts to boulders that fly in space, and fall on planets. And when they fall on earth they are called 'meteors'. It is difficult to say how they form.

But this is maybe a nice story, about some specific meteorides, that form meteorshowers:

Some Meteorites were once comets, that broke up in smaller parts due to strong forces, when they pass the strong gravity of the sun, or when they heat up... They are called meteors just because they fall on earth, mostly in showers or rains. ('meteo' means 'weather')

and how do comets form: well those were just objects floating very far out of the outer planets, they collected dust that attracted to eachother to form clumps. At some point in time when two of those clumps come near to each other, gravity pull between them caused that one of the clumps started to fall into the direction of the sun, and then it became a comet.

Comets always have a very strange elliptic orbit around the sun, it comes from very far, goes in a very (well almost) straight direction to the sun, comes at very close distance to the sun, and then gets warped with incredible speed to very far outerspace, where it originally came from, again.

(this sometimes breaks them apart, they even sometimes touch the sun!, there is at nasa a movie where it can be seen)

Why do i make so much fuzz about that orbit: because it explains some very nice things that you can see from meteors. you have to see: once the comet has been broken up, the meteorites from that comet still fly in the same orbit, they are flying actually like a train of stones behind eachother in that orbit.

Once meteors fall on the earth, you get falling stars. so the earth then crosses the orbit of a former comet, and you get showers of meteors. A very famous night is always 13-august, when we cross the orbit of the perseids. you will see a lot meteors during that night....
