It must have had some connection to HAARP. That's the only explanation that makes sense to me, especially since you were at military base where they COULD order you to stop looking:

What an interesting experience!
It does read just like what a rocket booster would look like as it reentered the Earth's atmosphere. The speed is about right (although perhaps a little on the slow side). The explosions would have been fuel tanks and other pressure vessels exploding from the heat of re-entry. When they exploded, liquefied gases or fuels in the tanks would rapidly expand and glow from the shock of hypersonic injection into the airstream.
It is a pity you were not allowed to continue to watch it, as it reads like a fine sight. It would have been interesting to see how it ended.
I saw a re-entry just a few weeks back. There were no explosions, but a long trail of sparks were left behind in the track of the object. It was several times brighter than the ISS and moved about twice as fast.
