Is the image in the telescope supposed upside down

Its the principles of ray optics.-Yes, unless there is an ercting prism or lens to flip the image, the image in a telescope will be upside down. This does not matter when recording images on film or chip.Or matter much when you are star gazing.......
i just bought a factory refurbished telescope and i just found out that everything i view is upside down. is it supposed to be like that or did i just get ripped off?

No, that's just how it is I believe. It's the principles of ray optics.

Yes, unless there is an ercting prism or lens to flip the image, the image in a telescope will be upside down. This does not matter when recording images on film or chip. Or matter much when you are star gazing. But if you are using it for terrestial viewing, you will want an erecting prism to re-orient the image in the eye piece.

You only notice it if you are using it for looking at things on the ground. You would need an extra lens or prism to invert the image if that is what you want.

Astronomical telescopes have traditionally always used the inverted image. Who is to say which way up is correct ? It makes no difference to the image; and an extra lens or prism would absorb some of the light and make the image fainter.

Stellar images are faint enough to begin with, so it was counter-productive to add any more components than absolutely necessary. Astronomers get used to looking at things upside-down !

-
If it's a Newtonian Reflector, yes, the image will be inverted.

-
The lenses got screwed up. You bought a defect.

-
Or you simply made a mistake reassembling it.
