Are there inhabited places in the world where the sun doesn't rise or set in a whole day

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-04-24] [Hit: ]
Please provide the country, population, when it happens, for how long and any other relevant details. Please provide some references if possible. Why this question?......
I know the poles can experience several days without sunrise (polar night) or sunset (polar day), but are there any countries/ land where this happens that happen to be inhabited. By inhabited I would exclude people living in those places solely for scientific purposes.

I'm looking for places where people live a relatively normal life (adults going to work and children going to school) where this is the case. I know there is at least one such place since I saw it on BBC documentary but i don't remember the name of the place.

Please provide the country, population, when it happens, for how long and any other relevant details. Please provide some references if possible.

Why this question??
In Islam, people have to pray 5 times a day and the time is mostly based on the position of the sun. I was asking someone what they would do at the north or south pole during polar nights and polar days, his response was to say that those places aren't inhabited. So please provide some references if possible.

Thanks in advance.

Yes. There are PLENTY of places that have relatively normal peoples' lives occurring with perpetual winter night.

I myself have twice ventured to Finland for the land of the midnight sun during summer. I haven't yet been brave enough to go during winter...but the people I visit indeed have stories to tell about the long and dark Decembers.

In general, the zones that are more north than Rovaniemi (a city at the arctic circle) are less inhabited. Most population centers (Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Anchorage, Moscow, etc) are south enough to at least get an hour of sunlight a day. There still are people living there and going about normal lives.

My uncle when he was young and visiting Finland (a long time ago) made the joke:
"The only reason why it warms up during the day is due to people opening their doors."

Of course, the real reason why it warms up during the day is subtle conduction through Earth from the regions that actually get some sunlight.
