Most of them use the qualifier, "life as we know it" particularly referring to the search for earth like planets.
Why?
What is the point of pretending like we have any idea what kind of circumstances life can evolve in?
In some ways scientists are so delusional. Or are they just trying to pretend like they know things in order to look smart? That's stupid because then when they find new life forms they have to redefine life and say oops guess we were wrong.
Also whats your opinion on the abundance of life within our galaxy?

I agree that "life as we know it" is a very narrow definition, and many scientists are beginning to recognize that. James Cameron's IMAX documentary "Aliens of the Deep" vividly demonstrated how life can exist on Earth at ocean depths where it was once believed that life as we know it could not survive. It raises the possibility that life could exist in other cold and dark places, perhaps even somewhere else in our solar system, such as one of Saturn's moons.
I think there must be life in other places in the galaxy. Even if only one in a billion planets can support life, there are so mahy planets in the universe that there could be millions of inhabited planets.

Yeah, which is more likely, all the world's scientists conspiring together, fooling the world into thinking they're smart (oh wait, guess they're not smart enough to do that) OR they're making reasonable conclusions from observable evidence? Seeing as we know no other life apart from that on our planet, we have to talk about life as we know it- because that's the truth!
We don't pretend we know where life (as we know it) can exist, because we can see it happen, in a huge variety of conditions here on planet Earth.
And, as far as I'm aware, there is no definition of what "life" is. So, egg residing on many scientist's faces is a problem not. Whoops, I broke my grammar.
