It can be hard to tell sometimes. Butterflies evolved from moths.
Most butterflies have thin slender filamentous antennae, with clubs at the ends.
Moths mostly have comb-like or feathery antenna, or filamentous and unclubed.
(But a few moths have clubed antenna, and some butterflies don't have them).
Most moths have a "frenulum" filament (very small) from the hindwing, matching up with bards on the forewing.
Butterflies don't have a frenulum (again, there are a few exceptions).
Most butterflies have fine scales on slender and smoother bodies.
Moths mostly have stout and hairy (or furry) bodies.
Moths fly at night, butterflies during the day; but there are exceptions to this.
Really, the only way to tell for sure is to study many species and genera of both, under the supervision of an expert. The science of moths and butterflies is call lepidopterology.

In order to tell the difference between a butterfly and moth, examine the following website and use your best judgement to choose!!!:

Maddie, not all moths are ugly. In Tennessee there are some real pretty moths. Moths tend to have wings that face backwards, they lay flat on their back when not in use, like an f-14 fighter jet. They tend to be more earthly colors, browns greys and such. Butterflies tend to be more vivid colors and their wings tend to be facing up from their back and they fold down.

moths are usually smaller fly faster and dont are mostly found at night around a light or something and dont really stay still i guess haha. and butterflies have nice colors on them fly slower and usually are found during the day

Moths have no real color just brown and yellow and kind of look like dirt. And butterflews are bigger and have wings that are colored so thats the main thing is color

A moth is white and is the beginning of some butterfly's. Butterfly's are mostly coloured and are the end of it's process. I think.

Moths are ugly and butterflies are pretty
