I saw this bird a while back that I always wondered what it was. I live in Southern Canada, but I couldn't find anything like it in my bird book.
It was roughly the shape and colour of a mourning dove, but bigger. About half the size of a chicken. It had a black V-shaped marking on it's breast. It had either a bit of red or yellow on it's wings, and an either black or red spot on it's head. I can't remember which, it was a while ago.
It was on the ground like a dove, in the garden. I have no idea what kind it was.

Sounds like a Northern Flicker. This is a woodpecker but it feeds on ants on the ground. Look up images of this species on Google.
