When I was in basic training in Ft.Sill Oklahoma I encountered in one area what appeared to be a giant wasp. It measured around 4 inches long, was dark black in color, and by all appearances was a massive wasp. I spotted around 4 flying around or sitting on trees in my immediate area. Does anybody know what this very large insect may have been?

Look up the Tarantula Hawk.
They're large and black.
They are not aggressive, but if you bother them they deliver one of the most painful stings known to man. The pain will last for about three or four minutes.
There are about 14 species in North America.
Here's a picture. They also come in all black.
