As someone who was heavily involved in social media updates early on during yesterday's mini-outbreak, I am PROUD that no one died. People listened to us and took the warnings seriously. Because they listened to the information we were putting out there, they survived. The National Weather Service in Fort Worth was on the ball yesterday and that is just awesome.

From a weather forecasters point of view, it was really part luck that nobody died. What I was glad to hear were the many stories about how people took quick action by getting into their basements, storm shelters, and getting out of their cars and to take shelter in a interior closet or bathroom and they credit those actions taken by them as the main reasons why they are alive. That makes me feel good because they were prepared and took the right action. That also means that all those outreach projects we have done as forecasters over the years did educate the people to help themselves when they were in the path of danger. Because, no matter how much warnings we put out and how much lead time we may provide to the public, it is really the action of the public that is going to save lives. And by knowing these safety rules, they will be able to help others during a crisis. It makes our job much easier knowing that once we issue a warning, they will know what to do.
