I have a sliding window (slides horizontally) in my bedroom. It's EXTREMELY difficult to open when it's cold out. After doing a brief web search, it seems that this is a common phenomenon regarding windows. Can anyone explain why?

Hello there. I don't know if this will help, but here we go. If you have a wood frame around your windows, say like in an old house, that wood actually expands, and kinda like deflated in certain temperatures. In the winter depending on where you live, if you suffer extreme cold, the wood could be in a sense "accommodating" for the heat in the home by swelling up to prevent a loss of heat to your home. The only suggestion I have for you is a tried and true...TRY some WD40...Spray it on the corners and along the sides, and allow it to set for a couple of minutes. Then try to open your window. If it opens, slowly raise and lower the window a few times to get the wd40 in the other crevasses to lube the areas that are sticking. If that does not work, my husband just said that it may be the frame itself, or that the wood is buckling putting pressure on the window and the frame. If thats the case have it checked out. Good Luck, hope this helps!

Also, with metal-framed windows the frame on the edge of the glass cannot shrink as much as the frame it slides in due to the glass not shrinking as much as the metal. Ice in the track also makes the window stick.

Wood shrinks in winter lower humidity and expands in warmer weather
