Is it possible for a plane to go 'round the world so fast the passengers get stuck to the ceiling?
Could the wings provide a downward force to prevent the plane from off into space?

answers:
billrussell42 say: At orbital speed near the surface of earth, you would experience zero gravity. At faster speeds, you would need inverse wings to keep you down.

that speed is
Satellite motion, circular
V = √(GM/R) = √(3.98e14/6.37e6) = 7900 m/s
or 7.9 km/s or 4.9 mi/s or 18000 mi/hr or mach 25

Andrew Smith say: No plane can fly this fast but they CAN perform an arc to keep people weightless for some time.
By tightening the arc they could potentially press people to the ceiling but the wings are not designed to provide this force. We know that stunt planes can do it because THEY can fly upside down just fine.
For a commercial jet they could turn over, upside down and perform the arc.
But then you would be pressed to the FLOOR not the ceiling. As such you would be unaware that the plane was performing the manouvre.

CarolOklaNola say: Planes no, but that IS what thee ISS does and what NASA's Vomit Comet USED to to do, BUT GRAVITY is the downward force. The wings are PART of the reason WHY the plane does NOT fallout of them sky. Air pressure a is the OTHER force that jeeps planes in the sky as well propulsion and fuel.

Jim Moor say: A plane? No.
A rocket? yes
-
Jeffrey K say: If it goes at 17,500 miles per hour, around the world in 90 minutes, you would be weightless. This is an orbit.
If it goes faster, it would go into an elliptical orbit or leave earth completely. I don't know what could hold it in a circular orbit. But if something did, then you would feel negative g's and be pressed to the ceiling.

Pearl say: i hope not

Donnie Porko say: Free falling is how you get people stuck to the ceiling.

Going fast around the world will just keep them in place but they’ll feel a force pressing against them. It’s like going on any carnival ride that goes fast in a circle.
-
skeptik say: Possible? Sure.
Technically feasible? No.
-
Mark IX say: The only way the passengers could get stuck to the ceiling is if the plane were falling towards the planet. If the plane is simply going fast the force is directed the wrong way.
-
Dze say: with enough g-force you could get spread out as thin as the paint lol ..
