What’s the difference between a nuke bomb and a atomic bomb, did we actually nuke japan or atomic bomb them?

-------------------------------------------------------

answers:
Joe say: In casual use, the words are interchangeable.

Getting a little more technical:

An "atomic bomb" is a fission device, that detonates when a mass of uranium 235 or plutonium goes critical.

A "thermonuclear bomb", a.k.a. "hydrogen bomb" is a fusion device, which detonates when a mass of hydrogen is persuaded to undergo fusion, after being subject to compression and heating. That's usually accomplished by detonating an atomic bomb inside the thermonuclear bomb.

The two weapons used against Japan were atomic bombs.
-
akihiko say: the same
-
say: The term "atomic" stands for highlighting a new method of getting energy coming not just from an electromagnetic source as in conventional weapons but from atoms bonding energy according to Einstein equation E = m*c^2
Fission and fusion are two different technologies of getting such scope , the second more and more effective than the first one .
-
armouror say: the only bombs dropped in anger were Atomic Nuclear devices
-
Daniel say: Atomic bomb is an old term. The original atomic bombs were fission only devices.
Later devices are generally fission-fusion devices, aka hydrogen bombs.
Generally speaking, both terms refer to the same thing. Nuclear bomb/warhead is a more modern term.
-
Bill-M say: no Difference.
-
Pearl L say: probably not nnuch
-
DW say: The usual usage is that an atomic bomb is a uranium fission bomb, like the ones that were used in WW2, and a nuclear bomb is a hydrogen fusion bomb (with a uranium fission trigger).
-
Bob say: Atomic and nuclear bombs use fission, thermonuclear and hydrogen bombs use fusion. The fusion bombs are WAY bigger. they can easily destroy a whole country .
-
Michael say: The nuke bomb comes with a side of guacamole.

martin say: Both terms apply, although "nuke" is a recent term.
-
Aunt Bee say: Atomic bombs, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki. You can Google the images of destruction. I think a nuclear bomb has been used for testing but I do not think any nuclear bomb has been used in war. THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE.
-
ioerr say: they're both words used to refer to any kind of nuclear weapon. no difference.
